I found a great article on the Houzz website the other day that I think is worth sharing with you. I found my head nodding frequently in agreement while I read the advice given. As a former builder I could readily identify with all of the suggestions and pit-falls identified in the piece. Read it carefully. It could really help with your build project.
I just have a few words to add to the excellent article below. Most people get very excited once they realise that their dream of building their own home is becoming a reality. Very often your home is a form of self actualisation, a form of self expression. Its at this stage that thoughts and ideas can be very romantic and far removed from the gritty reality of realising the build. The most obvious professional that will help you to realise your self build dream is your chosen architect. However, don’t forget the back room team that is essential to a successful build. An experienced quantity surveyor and competent structural engineer are essential to help the architect form the full construction drawing set, specifications and project budget. These guys don’t tend to be very visible but play a hugely important role behind the scenes. So, to emphasise some of the points made in the article below;
- Be specific, with all requirements and performance standards clearly documented
- Ensure all structural details are clearly designed and specified
- Embrace the tendering process, its not a cost, its an insurance policy
